Cleaning the mattress periodically is important to avoid the formation of stains, dirt, dust and mites. In hardware stores or at the supermarket there are specific detergents for cleaning the mattress. However, some of these contain aggressive chemical agents that could ruin the mattress fabric.

In this guide, however, we want to give you some useful tips to clean the mattress in a natural way , using less aggressive alternative methods, such as steam or bicarbonate.

Is your mattress removable?

Several new production models are removable, especially those in polyurethane such as memory foam mattresses . This means that the surface fabric can be removed with a simple zipper.

How to clean the mattress in this case? The fabric is easily washable and stained in the washing machine. Remember to use the delicate garments cycle and do not exceed the temperature of 30 ° C.

Unfortunately, the old spring mattresses are not removable so the cleaning operations begin to be more delicate, especially when you need to remove the stains from the mattress or when there are unwanted odors .

How do you clean the mattress?

The cleaning operations should be done a couple of times a year, perhaps with the change of season. In fact, it is important to prevent the formation of yellowish spots or dust mites. The sanitization and sanitation of the mattress should never be neglected to avoid unpleasant surprises: from odors to the presence of allergens.

With the vacuum cleaner

This is the first step to effectively clean the mattress. It is used to remove dust and dead skin : you cannot imagine how much it accumulates and not only in the most superficial layers. Using special vacuum cleaners, it has been found that surprising piles of dead skin can be removed which then feed the dust mites .

The vacuum cleaners that we generally use at home do not have enough power to reach the innermost layers, but they still serve to clean the mattress at least in its most superficial layers.

With baking soda

It is the cheapest and easiest method of all. Baking soda is a substance readily available in any supermarket and has a very low cost. It is used to disinfect fruit or vegetables, but also to clean the house.

It is sufficient to create a mixture of water and bicarbonate to obtain a detergent, antibacterial and anti-odor compound.

HOW TO DO? Obviously, start removing pillows and linens and airing the mattress. Carry out these operations on a well-ventilated or sunny day to speed up drying after cleaning the mattress. In a bowl, pour your mixture of water and baking soda and start rubbing it on the surface using a delicate brush.

There is no need to exaggerate with the quantities: a couple of spoons in a basin of water are enough. Do the same on the other side and let the surfaces rest for a few minutes . With a clean and dry cloth, rub the surface of the mattress, removing the bicarbonate that may be left on the surface and any residual dust.

How to remove stains from the mattress?

The biggest problem is the dried bloodstains. In fact, if the stain is fresh, it may be sufficient to rub it with cold water ( never use hot water which could worsen the situation and form an indelible halo). If it does not come away, use a little hydrogen peroxide (in a ratio of 1: 5 with cold water) which must be left to act for about 1 hour.

If the stain is already dry, in addition to hydrogen peroxide, you can try vinegar or lemon  to which you need to add salt. You wet the stain on the mattress, and then sprinkle it with lemon juice (or vinegar) and then with cooking salt. It is scrubbed with a delicate brush and left to dry. At this point you can clean the mattress with water and bicarbonate to remove any odors of lemon or vinegar that have formed.

Other tools to clean the mattress

Hot steam is also a great way to clean and sterilize the mattress. Steam facilitates the removal of stains, even the most difficult to remove, bad smells and dirt in general.

It is effective against pee, blood and mold stains, but there is a need for what is called a vaporetto,  a tool similar to a vacuum cleaner which however emits a jet of hot steam. It is the heat that kills germs and bacteria and disinfects the mattress .

Conclusions

When you have a small child or a dog that is still in danger of peeing on the bed, it’s best to prevent the problem of spot cleaning. For this reason we advise our customers to use a good  waterproof mattress cover . In this way the mattress is insulated, protecting it from unwanted liquids and odors.
